Persuasive Text Identifying

Reading Whale Rider Bias Opinion

The following summer, when Kahu was 3, was dry and dusty on the coast.  Koro Apirana was concerned about our drinking water and was considering at one point bringing it in by road tanker.  One of the boys suggested that the sweetest water was DB light brown and that the hotel up at Tatapouri would be happy to deliver it for free. Another of the boys added that we have to escort it to Whangara because, for sure, someone would want to do a Burt Reynolds and hijack it.
Into all this rough-and-tumble of our lives, Kahu brought a special radiance. Koro Apirana was as grumpy with her as ever but now that Porourangi was home, and now that wanganga sessions were attracting young boys for him to teach, he seemed to bear less of a grudge against her for being a girl and the eldest grandchild.
“Don’t blame Kahu,” Nanny Flowers used to growl.  “If your blood can’t beat my Muriwai blood that’s your lookout.”
“Te mea te mea,” Koro Apirana wuld reply.  “Te mea te mea.”
In particular, Koro Apirana had discovered three sons from mana bloodlines to whom he hoped to pass the mantle of knowledge.  And from the corner of his eye, he could see that Porourangi and his new whaiaipo, Ana, were growing very fond of each other.  Now she didn’t have any Muriwai blood so, you never knew, Porourangi might even come up with a son yet.
Under these conditions, the love which Kahu received from Koro Apirana was the sort that dropped off the edge of the table, like breadcrumbs after everybody else had a big feed.  But Kahu didn’t seem to mind.  She ran into Koro Apirana’s arms whenever he had time for her and took whatever he was able to give.  If he had told her he loved dogs I’m sure she would have barked, “Woof woof”.  That’s how much she loved him.

Reflection
WAL to identify bias in a text.  We had to highlight the words that showed Koro Apirana being biased.  He would be mean to Kahu because he wanted a boy to be the chief but Kahu was next in line and she is a girl.

I thought this activity was
tricky to find where he was being biased.
easy because I could find the examples.

The easiest part was the ones where it said he was grumpy with her.  The hardest part was where it didn’t say it very clearly.

This activity was really interesting.
I hope we get to do something like this again.
I’m enjoying learning about Whale Rider.
I’m enjoying reading the book.

Bridge To Teribithia Summarising

Reflection
WALT sequence and summarise the text of the different chapters. We also put all the slides in order from chapter 1 to chapter 13. I thought this was easy because we read the book and the movie so I got a clear understanding about the story. My next step is to make my sentences more clear for the audience.

Making Connections

Room 20 has been reading Bridge to Terabithia. In the story it w as rain really hard and the creek was swollen and flooded. Yesterday it was pouring as well. So we decided to do some authentic learning. We made some raincoats from plastic bags and walked down to see the creek behind our school! We could see water flowing quickly and the plants that had been flattered

Reflection
I thought this was really fun because we could relate to Jess on what we could see

Bike Skills

The best thing about bike skills was the ramps, it was super fun riding over the obstacles.
The thing I found most challenging was riding on the thick grass. It was really challenging because it was hard to pedal fast, and when you tried to peddle fast your thighs and legs got so tired.
Something that was new to me was the ramps, because I had never gone over those ramps before so it was exciting going over them.

Venn Diagrams

I found this easy because I know my evens and odds.  I learnt that square numbers are the numbers where you can put them into a square. I need to keep practising my square numbers because it is another step closer to being a higher stage on maths.

The Red Surfer

I was working with Saffullah and Ereura we where reading the red surfer.
We put all the words that our group didn't know onto a Graph so we could understand those words so if we come across them in a different book we have a clear understanding of what that word is about. In the future I should work on putting words into clearer definitions.

I found this easy because I knew how to put my senses into a sentence.
The thesaurus helped me a bit to use more descriptive words so then my story would be much more sophisticated and interesting. I need to work on my grammar and punctuation.

Term 1 Week 2

Today its Friday week 2. I feel glad that I have put into this class. In the last 2 weeks we have done the powhiri, maths, house captains, house points, monitors, art, games and what is the purpose of school.

House points The teachers introduced us to a new system. The new system is you cant get yellow cards or red cards you can only get ticks. The ticks are only for the people that are doing the right thing like respect, resilience and responsibility. Every time you get ten ticks you get a token and a reward. The rewards are better depends how many lots of ten ticks you have. If a teacher outside of the class sees you doing the right thing you get a token. To get tokens inside the class you need to get ten ticks.

Maths Mrs Graham said that Elm Park was having there 50th anniversary.  As a gift, we where going to get a camera man with a drone to take a photo, of us shaped like a 50. It is our job to mark out the 50 on the field. So we went on google maps and took a screen shot of the field. Than put an image of a 50. Then we saw how the 50 lines up with the playgrounds the trees and the rugby posts.

Monitors On the very first day Mrs Graham asked me to be the bell monitor. That means that I ring the bell whenever it needs ringing. I am also a peer mediator for this year. Last year I also got picked to be a peer mediator. That means I don't have to do any of the training. I got picked to be the School Councillor. That means that I show people around the school and sometimes I host the assemblies.
